Hey guys, you rock big time. Episode after episodes, I can’t help myself but to wait and wait for the next one. Your “uncut” views about different aspects of OpenSource technology are blunt, but very helpful. I am not an OpenSource expert who can comment on your views, but I am an OpenSource admirer and would like to suggest a few more topics which you can pick up in upcoming episodes!
Ok a bit of history first, with a fear that my mail might be ripped apart in any of the upcoming episodes. Anyways, I am 25 who hated Window$ from as long as he can remember. I dived into OpenSource straight with Gentoo and you can expect what a mess it would have been, but I learnt a lot. I finally settled with Ubuntu. Only lately I started admiring and using Fedora for their innovative nature and contribution back to OpenSource community (your views needed on this). But still I would need some courage before I can use the faster kid, Arch on one of my slower lappy due to its fragile nature.
When I started with KDE3, I found it lacking standardization between different windows and apps. I tried GNome which I fell in love with due to its ‘elegant’ and highly standard feel between windows and apps. I gave KDE4 a try and felt it to be the next big thing. Its standard, elegant and bleeding edge. Maybe 6 months down the line it would be usable as a primary desktop.
Being a full time linux user, I feel that linux base platform and kernel development is superb. A little more help from device vendors and linux will be every user’s dream. However, its linux’s GUI development which I am a little concerned about. Hence I want to draw your attention to following two topics.
1. MAC OSX GUI – Sure it is a paid OS, sure it is closed source but what apple offered years ago, we still cant meet it in gnome or kde. OSX GUI is a sheer royalty. The windows, the toolbars, the effects, the standardization, the finish, the IQ factor, and all. Its years ahead of gnome or KDE3. Though I hope, rather pray, that KDE4 will meet and beat it soon. We would love to hear a session comparing OSX’s gui with gnome/kde and some thoughts on gnome/kde’s standardization and IQ factor.
2. MOBLIN GUI (minus multitasking ability) – It looks the next smoking thing. It has amazingly high IQ factor where GUI developers just seems to have read your mind. GUI elements looks gorgeous. They animate, slide, blur (and sometimes crash) to take user’s heart away. There is a surprisingly high degree of standardization and simplicity between apps. Even in beta stage, it well meets the royalty or OSX. Maybe someday it will evolve to shame OSX. A session on Moblin GUI will be awesome.
I want to go into Linux development soon, hope the developers are friendly and not like Ubuntu community as you say. And you two are an awesome duo, just keep ripping things apart in your reviews
Another good show! I will work on my spelling, and you’ll notice I used the site this time so as not to mis-spell the email address. I think I have ‘jd’ down but I would like to practice more.
While I am a newcomer Gentoo, I think you hit the nail right on the head. Gentoo is a case of diminished returns. For a regular user, the time it takes to compile and install and compile again negates any advantage it has being optimized for the hardware. A number of other distro’s run just as well with far less headache.
In 2002 Gentoo may have been “the sex” as JD would say, however a look at distrowatch shows it’s popularity has long since passed. Linux and the rest of the world have advanced since then, Gentoo on the other hand, not so much.
I wish their 12 man strong developer/community the best of luck.
